Customer stories

"The expertise of Phoenix 3D Metal is truly sublime."

- Annabell Frerichs / Supply Chain Management / Duotank -

A nice and, above all, good-tasting beer. The first thought that springs to mind is the glass of beer that is placed in front of you on the table. At least, we did, until Duotank contacted us. They were looking for a supplier who could offer them an alternative for the production of beer tanks (in small series). Specifically, the lid and bottom, in various sizes and materials (e.g. stainless steel and copper).

“They make an essential component for our double-walled beer tanks, and from an aesthetic point of view, they are also super important. Phoenix meets our needs in all respects. We have only been working together for a short time (a year), but we have already concluded that it is a phenomenal company.”

“After a glance at the website of Phoenix 3D Metaal, it was clear to us immediately that they could create what we needed. An initial meeting confirmed this. We soon started working on our drawings and then entered the simulation process. A fine working method. Based on the simulations, they designed several moulds for cost-efficient production. In the preliminary stages, they already showed a great deal of added value. For us, the great advantage of Phoenix’ is that they guarantee and realise quick turnaround times. On this basis, we can again give our customers concrete and, above all, accurate delivery times. And then, of course, the aesthetics.

Our beer tanks are attractive and in some cases an essential part of, for example, the interior of a pub. At Phoenix 3D Metaal they understand it like no other; the more attractive the tank, the better it sells. In the end, of course, that is the most important thing for us.” “If you ask me what stands out in our collaboration with Phoenix 3D Metaal, it is the expertise. It is sublime. They are also always clear and realistic as well as open and flexible.

No, this is not an advertising story, it’s just a phenomenal company!”

"They provide well-founded advice, resulting in a cost-efficient and manufacturable product."

- Leo Spierings / Adviseur & voormalig CEO / Spierings Mobile Cranes -

The mobile tower crane of Spierings Mobile Cranes is almost too beautiful for the heavy work it carries out. At Spiering, they see it differently. It is exactly that state of the art look that the company wants to give to its cranes. The activities of Phoenix 3D Metaal focus on a hybrid crane (type SK487-AT3 City Boy) within the range of Spierings. The type is unique -and the first of its kind.

Three birds with one stone

“We were looking for a supplier who could produce the cabin enclosure and the engine enclosure for our mobile crane. The first question for us was what material we wanted to use. The final weight (as low as possible) and a cost-efficient production were the most important issues for us. In the end, we came to Phoenix 3D Metaal and chose the rubber pad forming technique and steel as the material. This was the strongest constructional material and for Phoenix the basis for an optimally manufacturable product. We could press the panels directly into the final shape of the cabin and engine compartment, including its structural function. At an earlier stage, we went about things differently. We built the cabin and then moulded plastic polyester sheeting around it to achieve the desired design. Two production steps, quite labour-intensive and therefore expensive. An additional advantage of the moulded self-supporting panels: the interior space increases by almost 10% in the width direction. This improves the ergonomic aspect of the operator/driver, especially during entry and exit. Phoenix as a product kills three birds with one stone.

During the preliminary phase, there was a lot of consultation between Spierings and Phoenix. “Together, we succeeded in making the sheet material used thinner and thinner while still maintaining its strength. We started at 2 mm thickness and are now at 1.2 mm. That seems a minimal difference. But in total, it means 230 kg less weight for our mobile crane. Essential and a great joint success.”

Cautious in the beginning

“The collaboration is pleasant. It is a team that proactively devises solutions during the development phase, even if a first design has already been made. They are certainly not too commercial in this respect. They want the best for the customer. Within Spierings’ we thought that Phoenix 3D Metaal was a bit cautious in the beginning. In the end, we understood where that caution came from. They want to give solid advice with a cost-efficient and optimally manufacturable product as the end result. They look for THE REQUEST behind THE REQUEST. Reducing the final weight is a great example of this. In short, the run-up to the start of production is considerable. But the result is worth it. Because once the moulds are there, things happen very quickly.”

- Ronald van der Ende / Directeur / HRsolar

Customers who – at first – are inclined to deep-drawing, but quickly look elsewhere because of the (high) investment. We hear and see it regularly. The result? They opt for the rubber pad forming technique or Phoenix 3D Metaal. So did HRsolar. “We soon found out that deep drawing was not an option for us because of the high costs. Google brought us to Phoenix 3D Metaal. Today they have been producing two products for us for several years; a cover and bottom and an absorber plate. Both products are used in our solar boiler. We make optimal use of the rubber pad pressing technique. We spent a lot of time optimising the products before actual production started. As far as I am concerned, this is also the strength of Phoenix 3D Metaal. In principle they occupy the ‘advisory chair’; they can do a lot and know a lot. The process from the first discussions to the mould and the FOT (First Out of Tool) was intensive. But with the desired result. By using rubber presses, we can produce at low cost at the desired quality.” An advantage in development “It is a team with which we can switch quickly and they have mastered the trick of keeping things simple. As far as I am concerned, the possibility of testing during the development phase is an absolute plus.

This gives us an edge over the competition. We are also very satisfied with the delivery reliability and the way we communicate with each other. Also, we regularly visit each other’s premises, so that together we can keep our finger on the pulse. The involvement of Phoenix 3D Metaal is therefore absolutely perfect.

- Hans Faas / Senior Purchaser / Kverneland group Nieuw-Vennep B.V.

Phoenix 3D Metaal has been working for Kverneland for many years. Where it started with the production of different (sub)parts for mowers, in recent years the company has worked towards a specialisation in the production of tubs for these wide Spreaders.

“The existing tubs failed in several areas when produced in low-income countries.“

By initiating a project in collaboration with Phoenix, Phoenix was able to produce the tubs more smartly, with a much-improved quality, which met Kverneland’s standards. And it did so at a competitive price (compared to the low-income country of Hungary where the tubs were produced in the past). But, at Kverneland (owned by the Japanese tractor manufacturer Kubota) they believe that things can always be done smarter and better. Now that  Kverneland has been acquired by Kubota, there is even more focus on this. In fact, we set up a special project – called Kubota Kaizen Competition – for it. An open-ended project, because it is aimed at continuous (process) optimisation. We involve all our suppliers in this project. Including Phoenix 3D Metaal. In the beginning, they were a bit hesitant because we already had an internal (process) optimisation project running. For us, it was a confirmation that they fit in with us.”

Go-getters with extensive knowledge

“I dare say that we are really happy with our cooperation. Phoenix 3D Metaal is reliable in terms of quality, price and delivery time. They are also extremely flexible, or you can call them go-getters. Whether we ask them to take on more work or less, they are always there for us and think along with us. After all these years, we know what we can expect from them – a foundation for collaboration. Their specialisation in rubber presses is really important to us. Internally our engineers are not yet at the level where Phoenix 3D Metaal operates. Because of their technical knowledge and experience, they can realise cost savings.

Naturally, we are very happy with that.

- Eduardo van den Berg / Algemeen Directeur / Pharmafilter

With the innovative Pharmafilter system, Pharmafilter helps hospitals to improve healthcare by making it safer, cleaner and more efficient. Phoenix 3D Metaal plays an important role in the realisation of this sustainable promise.

Phoenix 3D Metaal manufactures parts for the system and the casing for a Tonto grinder. To achieve this, the rubber pressing technique is used as well as some additional -in-house- production technologies (e.g. bending and welding). It is the combination of techniques that ensures Pharmafilter gets exactly what it needs; a seamlessly finished product without corners or spaces where bacteria can nestle. The ‘curves’ in the grinder (created by using the rubber press technique), provide that extremely important cleanability.

Added value

“There are several aspects that stand out for us in the collaboration with Phoenix 3D Metaal. In contrast to many ‘normal’ production companies, they have an engineering/design department who go the extra mile. They take on board our idea or starting point and do not just copy our drawings. They calculate what is needed, check whether our idea is good and whether it can be done better and smarter. That is a very interesting and important service for us. We do not know how to make optimal use of the rubber pad forming technique. Phoenix 3D Metaal does have a lot of expertise. The result is a dimensionally stable and high-quality product.”

“Also, it is simply a professional team. Promises are kept and if something goes wrong, they solve it quickly. They are also flexible, which is also important to us. Finally, there is the after-sales. They stay involved, even after delivery. That is not the case everywhere. Phoenix 3D Metaal focuses on a long-term relationship and that is a very important element in doing business for us.”

Sustainable and involved

Pharmafilter transports and processes hospital waste in a fully circular manner. Organic waste is converted into (sustainable) energy, water is purified and reused in hospitals and the biodegradable waste is used as a raw material in the creation of new hospital products made from bio-plastics.

-Frank Hoonakker / Manager Purchasing / Boon Edam

Boon Edam, Phoenix 3D Metaal and the rubber pad forming press. A trinity that cannot be ignored. At Boon Edam, they are happy with a supplier that primarily fulfils the customer’s wishes to their full satisfaction and also meets all kinds of fine and especially desirable preconditions. “Phoenix 3D Metaal took us away from working with fixed shapes. With the rubber pad forming technique, they lifted sheet metal working to a completely different level, where the possibilities are endless and the end result represents a unique and high-end design. In this way, we are ahead of the competition”.

Genuine partnership

For years Boon Edam and Phoenix 3D Metaal have been working together in an approachable way. “Phoenix’ approaches work as a go-getter.”Phoenix’ approach is an approachable one. They do not just listen to problems, but they know how to tackle and solve them and that is ultimately what matters. Also, they have a lot of creativity and show genuine partnership. Phoenix 3D Metaal is therefore of great value within our supply chain. That is why we as Boon Edam can speak of a collaboration that is just right across the board.”
